Privacy
This is a free, open-source, nonpartisan site. It has no ads and no analytics or tracking scripts.
Reading the site
You can read everything without an account. Pages are static files served by GitHub Pages, which, like any web host, sees your IP address when your browser asks for a page. Some pages fetch fresh data from our database (Supabase) as you read.
If you sign in
- We store your email address so we can send sign-in links. We never send you anything else.
- We store what you follow and when you last read your feed.
- If you save an address under Find my reps, we keep only the result: the address as matched (shown back to you), your state, congressional district, state legislative districts and, in Boston, your council district. The address goes to the U.S. Census Geocoder to find your districts; we cache districts by location rounded to about 100 metres, never by address.
- You can delete your saved address at any time, and deleting your account removes everything tied to it.
Discussions and Pol.is
Discussions are hosted by Pol.is, a nonprofit open-source tool, and shown inside our pages. When you open a discussion page your browser loads Pol.is directly, so Pol.is sees your IP address, loads its own analytics script and sets its own cookies under thePol.is privacy policy.
What we send to Pol.is:
- the discussion id and title, and the page’s address without any query string or fragment;
- if you are signed in and may take part, a random identifier created for you alone, which is not your account id, email or address and is used only so your votes stay together across visits.
We never send Pol.is your email, account id, address or districts. Your residency is checked on this site, and Pol.is is told only whether you can vote and write.
You can also take part without an account. Then we send Pol.is no identifier at all, and Pol.is keeps your votes together with its own cookie in your browser.
If you ask for a discussion without signing in, your browser keeps a random number (in its local storage) so your request counts once and you can take it back. We store that number with the item you asked about and nothing else.
What you write in a discussion is public and anonymous. Pol.is publishes the votes and statements of every conversation as open data for research, without names.
